Indivisible Spell Out at the Beach included “No Going Back” on May 31
Over 1000 people joined the spell out at the beach. The word “Resist” was spelled out with people in different colors, along with the Santa Cruz Pride slogan, “No Going Back.”
From Santa Cruz Sentinel (May 31, 2025): “More than a thousand people stood in protest in the sand on Saturday at Main Beach in Santa Cruz to create a human banner spelling out the word “RESIST.” Indivisible Santa Cruz County enlisted the help of Brad Newsham and Travis Van Brasch, who have organized human banners at Ocean Beach in San Francisco for the past two decades. The rainbow-themed action included the words “no going back” to emphasize a connection with Santa Cruz Pride Week, which presents a celebratory parade on Pacific Avenue Sunday morning.”
From Lookout (May 31, 2025): “The event, organized by Becca Moeller and Indivisible Santa Cruz County, aimed to protest the actions of the Trump administration and also stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community as Santa Cruz celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Pride event this week, said Moeller. The human banner spanned 220 feet and each letter spelling out “Resist!” was 70 feet tall, said banner designer Brad Newsham. Under the letters was another message, “No Going Back,” a nod to the Santa Cruz Pride’s theme for this year’s celebration. “
From Fox News (June 1, 2025): “Nearly 1,000 people gathered at Main Beach in Santa Cruz, California, on Saturday for a Pride Month protest aimed squarely at President Donald Trump. Participants formed a massive human banner that spelled out "Resist!" in rainbow colors as part of a demonstration organized by Indivisible Santa Cruz County. The 220-foot-wide display, with letters reaching 70 feet high, was designed by longtime left-wing activist Brad Newsham. Organizers described the event as a peaceful act of resistance and a show of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.”
