Co-hosts Rob Darrow and Cece Pinheiro discuss various aspects of Santa Cruz LGBTQ+ history in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Santa Cruz Pride in 2025. Many Stories 

There are so many stories about so many aspects of the Santa Cruz LGBTQ+ culture. This radio show will highlight the many people and events over the past 50 years. Through these shows we hope to increase the listener’s knowledge about the important contributions of Santa Cruz County LGBTQ+ people to the local, state and national culture and history. 

Show 1, Jan. 12: Our First Show. Setting Santa Cruz County LGBTQ+ History in the Context of National LGBTQ+ History.

Co-Hosts Cece Pinheiro and Rob Darrow provided listeners with the context of this show as well as the context of the 1975 Santa Cruz Pride events in context with the National LGBTQ+ history. Special guests included Dan Dickmeyer who was part of the Lesbian and Gay Men’s Union (LAGMU) who put on the first Santa Cruz Pride events and David Paine who helped film the Pride picnic held in San Lorenzo Park. Dan and David have been a couple for over 50 years and shared stories about their memories of that first Pride.

At UCSC, feminist studies began in 1974 and in the same year, the Santa Cruz Women’s Health Collective began and the women’s music festival took place in the Santa Cruz Mountains - developed and produced by many lesbians. Hear from some of the women involved - Kater Pollock who was involved with the Women’s Health Collective and from Patti Maxine who has been part of the music scene around Santa Cruz since the 1970s. Patti graced us with the song called, “Peace on Your Journey.”

The young people who helped organize, interview and edit the "Santa Cruz County Queer History Podcasts" in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Santa Cruz Pride s.  Over 20 interviews have been conducted by high school and college aged students with older queer people who have been part of the many events of the last 50 years of Santa Cruz County LGBTQ+ history.  Hear from Mars, Levi and Maddie who will shared their insights and learnings from the many interviews.
