Music for the people! 1974
High and Coolidge
Description: The piece reflects the interconnection between the music culture of Santa Cruz in the 70s and the queer community building that was happening in that period. In particular, the Amazon Women’s Music Festival took place in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974 and brought together lots of lesbian musicians. In addition, the first openly queer radio program, “Closet Free Radio” began on KZSC and continues today. The program made people feel seen and heard. The success of these two related events which grew out of the Santa Cruz queer community, shows enduring strength and resilience no matter the setbacks.

Artist Bio: I am a college student attending UCSC and there is no place I would rather have gone to school. I feel deeply connected to this place, and it has taught me alot. I grew up in Los Angeles, and I now consider Santa Cruz to be my home. I have known I was queer since elementary school. I have found the label non-binary to be fitting for me since I have always been surrounded by the LGBTQ+ community. @tyranusaris
